Stephan Gallacher, Ian Poulter and Lee Westwood have been named as the three European wildcards by captain Paul McGinley. The former world no.1 Luke Donald and the Italian Francesco Molinari are the unlucky players who will miss out on this year’s highly-anticipated showdown at Gleneagles.Gallacher is the only Scot in the European Ryder Cup squad and he narrowly missed out on an automatic selection by one shot at the recent Italian Open.On his three Ryder Cup selections, McGinley said: “I think we have three Sports players that will add a lot to the nine already qualified and make the European team as strong as it needs to be to take on the might of America.”McGinley admitted Gallacher’s sterling performance in Italy was a telling factor in selecting the Scottish rookie.

It’s very proud for him being Scottish. Again I’m lucky, having played a Ryder Cup in my home country I know what it’s going to be like for Stevie, how proud he will be and his family as well too.Poulter may not have enjoyed the best of seasons, however the 12-time European Tour winner has been part of three Ryder Cup winning teams and boasts the highest win percentage (80%) of any player who has played at least 15 matches in the tournament.

A very unromantic ending to the Tour de France saw Vincenzo Nibalo clinch the Tour de France in a very ceremonial trip down the Champs Elysées, becoming the first Italian to win the tour since Marco Pantani in 1998. He finished clear ahead of second place, enjoying the usual cigars, champagne and selfies with other riders in the final leg of a grueling Tour that started in England. For a second straight year, Marcel Kittel snatched the final spring – an easy enough affair without dominant sprinter Mark Cavendish in the running.
